The "Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate” is located in the north of Lecce and is a splendid example of Romanesque; the Abbey was founded by Tancredi D 'Altavilla in the XII century. Legend says that in this place the Madonna appeared to Tancredi between the horns of a deer, hence the name “Cervate” or “Cerrate”.

The today’s remains of the monastery are the Church, a lovely porch with slender columns and magnificent capitals, a well and underground oil machine mill. Also visit the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions.
